This rohe map represents the area over which Tapuika exercises kaitiakitanga for the purposes of the Resource Management Act 1991 and is based on the Area of Interest agreed between Tapuika and the Crown in the Deed of Settlement signed on 16 December 2012. Tapuika Area of Interest from the Deed of Settlement [JPG, 268KB].
Te Takapū o Tapuika (the Tapuika tribal estate) begins with the arrival of Te Arawa waka. Whilst the waka was situated between the Owairakei Stream at Te Akau (Pāpāmoa) and Motītī Island, Tia (father of Tapuika) stood at Te Tū-Aro-a-Tia to claim this rohe by way of taumau: "Mai i ngā pae maunga ki te toropuke e tū kau mai rā ki te awa e rere mai ana, waiho te whenua ko te takapū o taku tamaiti, a Tapuika." The interior boundaries were formed through take tupuna as our tupuna Tia made his way inland discovering and naming Lake Taupō-nui-a-Tia. His son Tapuika remained in the lands claimed by his father. Thus through noho tūturu Tapuika claim mana whenua, mana moana.
This rohe extends into the regions or districts of these local authorities:
